The Holy Family with Saint Nicholas of Tolentino

Mazzolino, who specialised in small devotional paintings, worked in Ferrara and Bologna. The abbreviated name of Christ is impressed by golden light upon the breast of Saint Nicholas as he contemplates the Christ Child who eats the cherries supplied by Joseph. Angels watch and play music; God the Father, together with the Holy Ghost (in the form of a dove), presides over the scene.
