Saint Francis kneels in adoration before the Christ Child; the wounds of the crucified Christ which were impressed upon him shine forth. Behind the Virgin, who holds Christ, stands Saint Joseph. Behind Saint Francis is Saint Elizabeth with her son, Christ's cousin Saint John, who protects a lamb (emblem of Christ's sacrifice) from a monkey (perhaps standing for sin). The painting probably dates from the 1520s.
