The Reverend William Holwell Carr (1758 - 1830) was one of the early benefactors of the National Gallery. He bequeathed his collection of Old Master paintings to the Gallery, which included works by Titian, Tintoretto, Rubens and Rembrandt, along with this portrait of himself.
