Under a stormy sky a naked man emerges from an agitated sea. Violent contrasts of light and shadow create a bumpy surface across his muscular body. The subject suggests a relationship to Géricault's masterpiece, 'The Raft of the Medusa' (Salon of 1819, Musée du Louvre, Paris), but it may rather be a study for a series of large Italian landscapes.
