Jean-Etienne Liotard: 'Portrait of a Grand Vizir (?)'

Explore the paintings

The costume corresponds with that of a Grand Vizir, but the sitter may just be wearing a Turkish costume. He was once identified as Edward Wortley Montagu (1713 - 1776), and again as a self portrait.

Liotard travelled widely in Europe and the East. He visited Constantinople in 1738, and stayed there for four years, making many drawings and pastels of Oriental subjects.
