The original owner of this work is unknown.
Gossaert visited Italy in 1508/9, and the depiction of the unusually muscular Christ Child clearly draws on the artist's knowledge of Italian painters and their study of the antique. The twisted pose of the child seems to have been inspired by Michelangelo.
This panel was presumably painted for use in private devotion.
