Jacob van Ruisdael: 'An Extensive Landscape with Ruins'

Explore the paintings

This is a smaller version of 'Landscape with Ruined Castle and Church', which is also in the National Gallery's Collection. It is an independent painting rather than a preparatory sketch for the larger picture. Three versions of the same view, or part of it, are known. It was probably painted in the second half of the 1660s or the early 1670s.

Attempts at identifying the church in the distance have so far been unconvincing.
