Italian, Veronese: 'Trajan and the Widow I'
This painting is part of the group: Cassone Panels with Scenes from the Life of Trajan

Explore the paintings

The Emperor Trajan was persuaded to postpone affairs of state, and render justice to a widow for her dead child (Dante, 'Purgatorio', X:76 ff).

This panel and 'The Justice of Trajan ' are presumably from a cassone, and are probably of the late 15th century.

Spruce was often chosen to make panels for painting in Verona, as opposed to Poplar which was more usual elsewhere in Italy.

The unusual frame may be original, although if so, it has been heavily regilded.
