The battle depicted here has not been associated with a literary or historical source. It is one of a series of panels of similar sizes which treats comparable subjects. It was first recorded with three other works from the series (two of which are now in the Szeben collection, Budapest; the other was on the London art market, 1949). A fifth panel also appeared on the art market in the early 20th century. It is surmised that the works all formed part of the decoration of the panelling of a dado or perhaps a suite of furniture. They were once attributed to Andrea Schiavone.
