At one time this painting was thought to depict Federigo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino (1422–1482), with two of his children.

The painting is a forgery of the early 20th century, cleverly designed to attract students of Renaissance portraiture. It may have been painted by Umberto Giunti, one of the most talented Italian forgers of the 20th century.
