Italian, Milanese: 'Bona of Savoy (?)'

Explore the paintings

The sitter, who holds columbines, was formerly thought to be Beatrice d'Este, but may perhaps be Bona of Savoy (1449 - 1503), wife of Galeazzo Maria Sforza. This identification finds some support by comparison with a representation of her on a medal.

If this is indeed a portrait of Bona of Savoy it may date from the period when she was Regent of Milan from 1476 to 1480 (after her husband's death), and must date to the last quarter of the 15th century (for she is represented as a mature woman). The picture is very damaged.
