Italian, Florentine: 'The Holy Family with Angels'

Explore the paintings

This painting was probably intended as a Nativity scene, depicting the Virgin in Adoration of the Christ Child, with Saint Joseph nearby. The antique ruins may suggest the passing of the old pagan order with the birth of the Christian era. This tondo was formerly ascribed to Jacopo del Sellaio (about 1441 - 1493). The work is somewhat eclectic and shows some influence of Domenico Ghirlandaio.
