Italian, Florentine: 'Cassone with a Tournament Scene'
Cassoni were part of the furnishing of the Italian bedchamber. In Florence they were generally painted. Tournaments, such as that depicted on the front of the chest, were frequently held to celebrate weddings between great families. Among the coats of arms and heraldic devices represented here are those of the Spinelli and perhaps Tanagli families.
