Outside the Gallery

On the lawns outside the Gallery there is a bronze sculpture of James II (1633-1701) from the studio of Grinling Gibbons, and a replica of the statue of George Washington (1732-1799) by Jean-Antoine Houdon, presented by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

At the east end of the building is a figure of 'Britannia/Minerva' by John Flaxman (1755-1826).

The Gallery fronts on to Trafalgar Square, which was designed by Sir Charles Barry and completed in 1845. There are many public works of sculpture in the square:
