The Foundation was set up some 60 years ago by Ernest Hecht, who is one of England’s major independent book publishers, Souvenir Press. The Foundation aims to support the work of other charitable organisations in helping the disadvantaged and promoting the advancement of the arts and education by making grants, with the aim of making a difference in a particular field.
The foundation has generously supported the annual Dame Myra Hess Day at the National Gallery since 2006. Dame Myra Hess Day takes place each autumn and celebrates the life of the famous 20th-century pianist Myra Hess, who staged concerts at the National Gallery during the Second World War to raise morale among Londoners. Dame Myra Hess Day features a programme of musical concerts, discussions and talks.
The foundation has also sponsored the creation of an online archive, documenting the success of the Myra Hess concerts during the Second World War. Read about the wartime Myra Hess concerts at the National Gallery.
