When he began painting around 1600, Hendrik Goltzius was already the most famous engraver in the Netherlands and perhaps all of Europe.

This frankly sensual work depicts the god Jupiter, disguised as a satyr, seducing the beautiful Antiope. She is asleep, sprawled amid luxurious cushions as the lecherous god creeps silently towards her bed. Vibrant colours and bold, sculptural forms increase the drama of the scene.
