Hendrick Verschuring: 'Cavalry attacking a Fortified Place'

Explore the paintings

This is not known to represent a specific battle or historical event. The figures are in seventeenth-century dress. The architecture and the cypress trees show that the scene is a southern one, presumably Italian, and the picture no doubt reflects Verschuring's experience of Italy. However, it is unlikely to date from the artist's Italian years: a very similar battle scene, signed and dated 1677, was in the Czernin collection in Vienna (in 1936) and this painting probably also dates from around 1677.
