Hendrick Dubbels: 'A Dutch Yacht and Other Vessels Becalmed near the Shore'
On the right is a States yacht ('statenjacht') with Dutch colours. This type of ship was used to transport members or guests of the States General, the chamber of representatives of the United Provinces in The Hague. On the left another States yacht fires a salute near a man-of-war.

The painting can probably be dated to the 1660s. Dubbels, an Amsterdam painter, specialised in marine subjects. His later paintings show the influence of Simon de Vlieger, Jan van de Cappelle and the van de Veldes. Works by these artists can also be found in the National Gallery's Collection.
