The arch of an iron bridge spans the Seine near Argenteuil to the west of Paris. A second bridge beyond, also newly reconstructed after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1, carries train traffic to and from the capital. A paddle steamer pulling a barge plies the river beneath.

Caillebotte lived nearby and his colourful Impressionist paintings record the impact of industry and modernisation on the suburban site.
