The jaunty sitter with his elbow jutting out and glancing at us over his shoulder is a formula found in Raphael's now lost Krakow 'Portrait of a Man' and it was popularised by Van Dyck. Coques has controlled the glittering silver costume to give a confidence to the sitter that is less apparent in his expression.
