Sir George Beaumont
Sir George Beaumont (1753 - 1827), painter, collector and connoisseur, was instrumental in the founding of the National Gallery. In 1823 he promised to give his collection to the nation if the government purchased the Angerstein collection and established a National Gallery at public expense. The Beaumont Gift eventually consisted of 16 pictures (some of which are now in the Tate Britain). The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN
