Luca della Robbia

The Florentine sculptor Luca della Robbia (1400 - 1482) is best known for his development of the glazed terracotta technique and the family workshop he founded to produce such works.

His earliest productions in this medium were for Florence Cathedral: the Resurrection and Ascension lunettes above the sacristy doors (1442-5 and 1446-51, respectively). He mainly confined his colours to blue and white.

His very earliest works are in marble, and include his 'Cantoria' for Florence Cathedral (1431-8). His work was also cast in bronze; he and Michelozzo made the bronze sacristy doors for the Cathedral.
