Fakes

A fake is created with the intention to deceive the viewer. Paintings have been created at different periods which purport to be a type of work they are not. For example the Collection includes a portrait group which is now catalogued as late Italian. The style of the work is intended to suggest that it was painted in the 15th century; it is now thought to have been painted in the early 20th century.

To define a fake it is necessary to have a clear idea of what constitutes originality. (See the entry for Technical Analysis)
