Glossary
Crayon
A medium in which the dry colour is mixed with wax. It is similar to pastel but greasier and cannot be easily rubbed. The distinction between crayon and chalk is not always precisely observed.
'A trois crayons' describes a drawing made with three differently coloured chalks, usually black, white and red, on tinted or coloured paper (generally blue). Rubens and Watteau made many such drawings.
