Assumption of the Virgin

The story of the Virgin Mary's assumption into heaven is based upon apocryphal legends, which told how the body and soul of Christ's mother were taken up to heaven by angels, three days after her death.

The event is celebrated as a festival by the Roman Catholic Church on the 15th of August. It first became a popular subject in art in the 12th century.
