This altarpiece is evidently the picture described by Vasari as in the church of S. Domenico in Bologna. It was in the chapel of the Boccaferri family, which also contained representations in fresco of the four patron saints of Bologna.
The saint on the right is identifiable as Saint James the Greater by his pilgrim's staff.
