Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo: 'Saint Jerome'

Saint Jerome (about 342 - 420) was the translator of the Vulgate Bible and the chief inspiration for Christian penitents and hermits. He is shown in the desert beating his chest in penitential prayer in front of a crucifix. The church in the background may represent SS. Giovanni e Paolo (S. Zanipolo), Venice, near which the artist is reported to have lived in 1532.
