Like Corot in 'The Leaning Tree Trunk', Costa uses bushes and trees to frame the view into the distance, a device pioneered by Claude. The girls picking flowers add to the romantic atmosphere of the painting, another parallel to Corot, who often introduced figures to enhance the sentiment of his compositions.

Costa started work on this canvas in 1878 while Leighton was visiting him in Lerici, where they studied together from nature.
