Giovanni Battista Viola: 'Landscape with a River and Boats'

Explore the paintings

Room A: Paintings after 1600

No specific literary source has been associated with the figure groups.

This painting, and its pendant 'Landscape with a Hunting Party', are enlarged variants of a pair of paintings attributed to Domenichino (Denis Mahon collection and private collection, respectively).

Both entered the Gallery as works by Annibale Carracci but they are now thought to be by the landscape specialist Giovanni Battista Viola.

It is not possible to date the works precisely, but they were certainly painted after Domenichino's earliest landscapes of 1602-3.
