Giovanni Battista Viola: 'Landscape with a Hunting Party'

Explore the paintings

Room A: Paintings after 1600

No literary source has been associated with the hunt depicted.

The painting is closely based on a work attributed to Domenichino in a private collection. It is considerably larger, however, and the handling is quite different. With its pendant 'Landscape with a River and Boats', the painting entered the Gallery as a work by Annibale Carracci; the two pictures were subsequently thought to be by separate hands but both are now attributed to Giovanni Battista Viola. The pictures are perhaps identifiable with a pair of overdoors recorded in the Giustiniani collection in Rome in 1638.
