Giovanni Battista Cima da Conegliano: 'The Virgin and Child'

Explore the paintings

The Virgin and Child are seated behind a marble parapet. Jesus holds the Virgin's belt; both figures look straight out of the picture.

The design is known in other versions by Cima and his workshop, including compositions in reverse. It also served as the basis of a signed picture by Previtali (Detroit , Institute of Arts) which can probably be dated about 1502. The landscape with the fortress and walled town crowning the hill at the left also appears in other works associated with Cima.
