The draped figure is probably to be identified as Saint Mark by his general appearance and attribute of a quill pen (suggesting an evangelist), but he may also be identified with Saint Luke or Saint James. In the 17th century this painting was recorded with 'Saint Sebastian' as part of an altarpiece in the church of S. Maria dei Crociferi in Venice.
The paintings are probably late works in which Cima appears to have been influenced by the sculpture of Pietro Lombardo (about 1435 - 1515).
