Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini: 'An Allegory of the Marriage of the Elector Palatine'

Explore the paintings

Room A: Paintings after 1600

The Elector Palatine, Johann Wilhelm, had married Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, daughter of the Grand Duke Cosimo III of Tuscany, in 1691.

This is the preparatory sketch for a large composition in a series of probably fourteen paintings by Pellegrini illustrating the Elector's life and reign. They were executed for Schloss Bensberg, near Düsseldorf, in the period of July 1713 - August 1714. This may be the first of the preparatory sketches.
