Gerolamo da Vicenza: 'The Dormition and Assumption of the Virgin'

Explore the paintings

In accordance with early tradition, the themes of the Dormition (the 'falling asleep' of the Virgin at the end of her earthly life) and the Assumption of the Virgin are here combined. The narrative is treated as if it were enacted on an outdoor stage, part of the festival decor of a Confraternity. The Virgin appears twice: on her deathbed and in glory above. The heavenly Virgin appears to be represented on a large banner suspended from the buildings on either side of a city square.
