German, North: 'Christ carrying the Cross'

Explore the paintings

Christ, carrying his cross to Golgotha, is surrounded by his tormentors. New Testament (John 19:17).

This picture has previously been catalogued as a work of the Westphalian School but is now thought to be North German, probably in the style of work from Lübeck. It may originally have formed part of a series of panels showing Christ's Passion, and probably dates from the very late 15th or early 16th century.
