Gabriel Metsu: 'The Interior of a Smithy'

Explore the paintings

The painting is an early work by Metsu, probably dating from about 1657 when the painter had settled permanently in Amsterdam. With its meticulous rendering of the tools of the blacksmith's trade, this picture belongs to a tradition depicting trades and occupations. The artist painted a few other similar subjects in early in his career, but this particular theme is relatively rare in Dutch painting.
