François-Xavier Fabre: 'Italian Landscape'

Explore the paintings

This idealised landscape was painted in the artist's studio in Florence. The landscape and the buildings may be based on sketches made in the countryside around Bagni di Lucca in Tuscany.

The subject of the picture is unclear: a classically draped figure takes a cart laden with sheaves of corn towards a furnace, from which smoke rises. This building may be a lime kiln or possibly a charcoal burner.
