Francisque Millet: 'Mountain Landscape with Lightning'
One or two Old Testament subjects have been suggested, such as the flight of Ahab and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, but these interpretations are not convincing.

Comparison with an early engraving establishes the attribution. The loose brushwork of the lower third of the painting in particular suggests Millet's familiarity with the work of Gaspar Dughet. However, the composition, with its extensive view from an elevated viewpoint, derives from 16th-century Flemish landscape.
