Francesco Morone: 'The Virgin and Child'

Explore the paintings

Morone was one of the leading painters in Verona in the early 16th century. This has been considered a very late work and has also been associated with a painting of 1503 in S. Maria in Organo, Verona. A date in the 1520s seems most probable. The painting is a fragment of an altarpiece by him. The foreshortened arms of the Virgin's throne (partly cut) suggests that it was originally placed quite high above the viewer, probably flanked by standing saints.

Elements of the composition recur in other works by Francesco Morone.
