Francesco Guardi: 'Venice: The Punta della Dogana'
This painting is part of the group: Two Views of Venice
This scene shows the entrance to the Grand Canal with the Dogana da Mar, the Customs House of Venice, built by Benoni about 1677. On top of the gateway is a golden ball, with a weather vane representing Fortune.

This work is a pendant to 'Venice: The Giudecca with the Zitelle' and can be compared with 'Venice: The Punta della Dogana' by the same artist.
