Francesco Guardi: 'An Architectural Caprice'
This invented architectural setting includes a domed building, possibly a temple set on a podium, and a semi-circular colonnade which concludes in the right foreground. The domed construction is derived in part from Palladio's unexecuted design for the Rialto Bridge.

The overall composition is based on a drawing by Guardi (London, Victoria and Albert Museum). Studies by Guardi, after Palladio's design for the Rialto Bridge, also survive (Venice, Museo Correr).
