Follower of Simon Marmion: 'Saint Clement and a Donor'

Explore the paintings

Inscribed on the frame, which is probably original, is a contraction of 'credendo sentiamus quod pronobis depreceris', which translates as: 'by believing let us perceive that you plead on our behalf'. It is a prayer to the Virgin and Child, who were painted on the centre panel of the triptych.

The centre panel and right wing, 'A Donatrix with Saint Elizabeth', were formerly in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, Lugano.

The late 1480s is the most likely date for the costume, and therefore the painting.
