An inscription on fragments of paper on the reverse of this painting suggests the site is near Fontainebleau, but the exact location has not yet been identified. Although formerly attributed to Jean-François Millet, this work is now thought to be by a follower of the artist, and is most likely to have been painted by his son, François Millet.
