Domenico Ghirlandaio: 'A Legend of Saints Justus and Clement of Volterra'

Explore the paintings

One of the predella panels for the high altarpiece of S. Giusto alle Mura, just outside Florence, probably painted in 1479.

In answer to the prayers of Saints Justus and Clement the granaries of Volterra, then besieged by Vandals, were miraculously replenished. The bread was placed on the ground outside the city, which so astonished the Vandals that they left. The two saints are shown at the city gates dispensing bread.
