David Teniers the Younger: 'A View of Het Sterckshof near Antwerp'

Explore the paintings

The large house partially hidden by trees has been identified as Het Sterckshof in Duerne near Antwerp. It has been suggested that the figures in the foreground may be the owner Jacob Edelheer and his wife Isabelle ven Lemens. The figure who offers the fish may be paying a seignorial due.

The dating of this painting is dependent upon comparison with two works of 1646 by the artist which illustrate similar handling, and in which figures wear similar clothes ('Village Fête', Woburn Abbey, collection of the Duke of Bedford; 'Village Fête', St Petersburg, Hermitage).

The woman in the foreground also appears in 'A Country Festival near Antwerp', a studio version of the Bedford painting referred to above.
