Cosimo Tura: 'The Virgin and Child Enthroned'
This painting formed the central part of an altarpiece in the chapel of the Roverella family in S. Giorgio fuori le mura in Ferrara. Pairs of saints with kneeling members of the Roverella family stood in the flanking panels, in an architectural interior connected with the one represented here.

One member of the family was represented knocking for admission to the central vaulted space. The Latin lines on the side of the portative organ in the foreground refer to this. They bid the Christ Child arise to open the door for him. The angels appear to be making music to waken Christ for this purpose.
