Corrado Giaquinto: 'Apotheosis of the Spanish (?) Monarchy (?)'

Explore the paintings

In the upper part, Jupiter holds a crown accompanied by Juno; below them to the left are Venus and Cupid, and Bacchus.

At the right, Minerva presents a female figure with spear and shield; this figure is perhaps a personification of Spain or some attribute of Spain. In the lower part, Hercules overcomes the Hydra.

This is one of several autograph sketches which relate to a ceiling painting originally in the Palazzo Santa Croce in Palermo (now in the Palazzo Rondinini-Sanseverino in Rome).
