Cornelis Vroom: 'A Landscape with a River by a Wood'

This composition is indebted to paintings by Adam Elsheimer such as 'The Small Tobias' (Frankfurt, Historisches Museum) and 'The Flight into Egypt' (Munich, Alte Pinakothek), which were available to Vroom in the form of prints by Hendrick Goudt.

Vroom's realistic landscape style is strikingly original and despite its small size, this landscape is a complex and innovatory composition which anticipates the early work of Jacob van Ruisdael.
