Cologne, Unknown artist: 'Portrait of a Woman'

Explore the paintings

The sitter holds prayer beads. She is shown before a window ledge on which are displayed an apple and a beaker of flowers. The beaker is of a type common in the Rhineland around 1500.

Formerly thought to be part of a diptych or triptych, but as the sitter is not in an attitude of prayer, the painting is likely to be an early example of independent portrait from the Rhineland.
