Circle of the Master of the Saint Ursula Legend (Cologne): 'Saint Lawrence before the Prefect'

Explore the paintings

Saint Lawrence was commanded by the Roman Prefect Decius to reveal the treasures of the Church. He assembled the poor of Rome instead, and showed them to the Prefect. Later he was put to death.

The painting is from a series showing the life of Saint Lawrence, of which five other paintings (of a probable total of eight) still exist. They were probably made for a church in Cologne.
